The Sandbottles of Andrew Clemens

Andrew Clemens (1857-1894) of McGregor, Iowa, invented a unique style of artwork and developed it to a high level of artistry. He collected naturally colored sand from the river bluffs near his home, and used the sand to "paint" pictures inside glass bottles. Using homemade tools, he meticulously arranged the differently colored grains of sand against the inside surface of the bottle to create realistic, amazingly detailed pictures. As he filled the bottles with sand, he used no paint, glue or other substances. Many of his sandbottles have been lost or destroyed, but some still survive.
