Additional Information:
Andrew was famous as an artist in a unique medium. He made "sand bottles", which are bottles filled with sand of different colors. The sand is painstakingly arranged grain by grain so that the inside surface of the bottle appears to be painted with a detailed pattern or a realistic picture. Andrew used only naturally colored sand that he collected from river bluffs near his home in McGregor, Iowa, and he worked with handmade tools. Some of the sand bottles he made are quite large and incredibly detailed, and are preserved in various private and museum collections.
